Local Studies is the section where you, your pupils and their families can get to grips with the surrounding community and all it has to offer. A brisk local economy can be created, with the school at the epicentre. A simple example of this is practiced at a school in Leeds.
The school has, with our help, set up a farm project, growing root-crops, vegetables and salad crops; soft fruits will also be available next year. Many of the parents provide seed potatoes that they have chitted at home, some grow seedlings, some provide labour on the farm, while others come and help at harvesting. In return, these parent
receive a constant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables. This simple ethos can be expanded right into the heart of the community, with a simple skills bank offering people the chance to trade with each other skill for skill.
Local Studies also provides the necessary templates and information to do a full and thorough survey of the wildlife, plants and trees in your school ground and surrounding area. You will also find here many ways to create simple new habitats to enrich the bio-diversity within your school and local community, which will in turn benefit the whole surrounding area.
Very soon, we will also be providing information on how each factor of sustainability Made Simple can be woven into the every day curriculum and which aspects fit into which section.
